The Rood Family of Shabbona contributed $10,000 to establish the William & Emiline Rood Family Scholarship Fund with the Kishwaukee College Foundation. Kathy Spears, daughter of William and Emiline Rood and Secretary on the College’s Board of Trustees, served as the agent for the Rood Family in the establishment of the Fund.
The Fund will provide scholarship support to full-time incoming or currently enrolled students pursuing a degree in agriculture or to students who have graduated from Indian Creek High School or Paw Paw High School.
“The opportunity to help students take advantage of the new course offerings and program through the Kishwaukee College Ag technology program was the impetus to provide this scholarship,” Spears says. The scholarship will tentatively be available in Fall 2020.
Following in the family tradition and in his personal passion, William Rood farmed in the Sandwich, Hinckley, and Shabbona areas until his retirement in 2011 at age 86. William and wife Emiline had a family of 9 children. Three of the sons are alumni of Kishwaukee College and worked in agriculture. The other six children also graduated from college.
“My parents emphasized academics and furthering education,” Spears states. All the Rood children are first generation college graduates.
