Kish announces 2021 Academic Award recipients

Kishwaukee College honored students for excellence in the classroom during the past year with the annual Academic Awards. Awardees received certificates commemorating their achievements in subjects including horticulture, marketing management, mathematics, engineering, organic chemistry, chemistry, history, and English.


Outstanding Sophomore in HorticultureNorinne Broski

Nominated by Janet Gallagher, Associate Professor of Horticulture, and Rich Alde, Assistant Professor of Horticulture.

Nominator Rationale — Norinne Broski is a non-traditional student who came into the program and has taken her dedication to education above and beyond. She is always in attendance, academically above the highest of standards and applies what she learns. She helps to motive others in the class in team projects.


Outstanding Freshman in HorticultureAbigail Castle

Nominator Rationale — Abigail's strengths include being dedicated to her studies, and volunteering for extra duties in horticulture like coming in early to help with floral projects or the plant sale. She is a motivator to her fellow students by helping them and being a team player. Her grades are outstanding.

Nominator Rationale — I have taught Lindsey in Calculus and Differential Equations classes. She works at a local business while going to school. She established herself as an excellent student right away. Lindsey holds herself to high standards and achieves them. She is a chemical engineering major who likes math humor and is fascinated by space.

Nominator Rationale — From the beginning of the Calculus sequence through this semester's Differential Equations class, Ray has been a top student in the several classes where I've taught him. He grasps concepts quickly and demonstrates mastery of the knowledge. He writes meticulous homework solutions and performs near perfectly on assessments. He also plays on the baseball team and exemplifies the best of our student-athletes.

Nominator Rationale — This award is given to students who consistently show exceptional understanding of engineering concepts and problem-solving. The student must also show work ethic and dedication that is above and beyond what is expected of an engineering student, which spans throughout all of his/her physics and engineering courses at Kishwaukee College. Graham Flieder has achieved all of these criteria while studying engineering at Kishwaukee College. During his two years here, he has consistently shown an exceptional understanding of math, physics, and engineering, a dedication to working hard in all of his classes, and a positive and polite demeanor with his teachers and fellow students.

Nominator Rationale — Outstanding English students have received an "A" in ENG 103, an "A" in ENG 104 or a literature class (or are well on their way to earning this second "A") and are nominated by English faculty for being exemplary English students.


Several students were also recognized for their works included in this year’s edition of Kish’s award-winning arts/literary magazine, The Kamelian. Students were able to showcase works of poetry, short fiction, 3D and 2D art, and photography. All student selections were nominated by Nate Gordon, Assistant Professor of English.
