English as a Second Language (ESL) classes strengthen English reading, writing, listening and speaking skills for employment, college and career technical classes, and student success. Classes are available for beginning, intermediate and advanced level ESL learners.
Register for ESL Classes
To begin the program, attend a registration session or schedule an appointment with the English as a Second Language team. Registration includes orientation and a short placement assessment so we can place you in the right classes.
Before you register
- Plan for about 3.5 hours to complete registration and placement testing
- Bring a valid photo ID
- Bring any previous transcripts if available

Citizenship Preparation Classes
Citizenship classes help eligible students prepare for the U.S. naturalization process and citizenship test. These classes provide instruction in American history and government, along with the English language skills needed for the interview and written portions of the test.
This course provides an overview of topics included in the U.S. Citizenship test and the naturalization process. Instruction may include:
- American history and government
- Civics and citizenship concepts
- Interview preparation
- Test-taking strategies
- English grammar and vocabulary used in everyday communication
Students interested in citizenship classes must meet the following requirements:
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Score 197 or higher on the CASAS STEPS assessment or receive any score on the GOALS assessment
- Provide proof of legal permanent residency at the time of enrollment

Classes are offered in-person and hybrid at Kishwaukee College and community locations in DeKalb, Sycamore, Rochelle and Genoa.
Classes are available morning, afternoon and evening to fit different schedules.
We offer beginner, intermediate and advanced ESL classes to help students improve reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.
Advanced students may take Academic Reading and Writing courses to prepare for college-level coursework.
Some semesters may also offer:
- Pronunciation and conversation classes
- Citizenship preparation classes
Registration takes place before each semester at Kishwaukee College and community locations.

Registration takes about 3.5 hours and includes:
- Completing program forms
- Orientation
- A placement assessment to determine the best ESL class level for you
This assessment helps ensure you begin classes at the level that fits your skills.
- Classes are open to adults age 16 and older
- Students ages 16–17 must provide a high school separation letter
- A valid photo ID is required at registration

Students may also use their own laptops, tablets or smartphones during classes.
