Phlebotomy Technician

Phlebotomy Technicians, or Phlebotomists, are skilled healthcare professionals who collect, transport, handle and process blood and other specimens.

Career Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment of phlebotomists is projected to grow 27 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations. Hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, blood donor centers, and other locations will need phlebotomists to perform blood work. The median annual wage for phlebotomists was $34,710 in May 2019.

Class Overview

The lecture portion of the class will be conducted online via D2L.  Class material will be released weekly. Discussion threads will be conducted regularly.  Students will be required to post responses by deadlines.  Open discussion option will be provided.  Exams and quizzes will be conducted online.  Review options will be offered.  Labs/hands-on practice will be completed on campus from 9:30am-12pm.  Meeting days are TBD.

Due to the inherent requirements of the profession, the following minimum abilities are expected of each student: high school diploma or equivalent with at least a 10th grade Math and English (speaking and reading) level; psychomotor skills (eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity) and visual acuity (normal or corrected) sufficient for safe and successful practice of Phlebotomist duties. 

Externship Overview

Externships are coordinated by Kishwaukee College-Community Education. Students are required to provide their own transportation to and from their externships site, which will be located within a 50-mile radius of Kishwaukee College. Drug testing, criminal background check, immunizations and health insurance are required for externship placement.

Ways to Register

Payment Plan

The cost of the class is $2,045. This cost includes textbooks and supplies. Federal and State financial aid are not available to offset the cost of the Phlebotomy Technician program. A payment plan is available.
