Medical Assistant
Medical assistants (MA) are highly versatile and knowledgeable health professionals specifically educated and trained to work in clinical settings performing administrative and clinical duties. From checking in on a patient or assisting with a procedure, medical assistants perform a wide variety of tasks that contribute to patient care.
In our Medical Assistant program, you will:
- Develop, practice and demonstrate the knowledge, skills and professional behavior needed to perform routine administrative and clinical duties of a Medical Assistant.
- Be prepared and trained to provide exceptional patient care and perform vital administrative and clinical tasks.
- Gain hands-on experience through lab and a 160-hour, non-compensated externship.
- Prepare to become a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA)
- Demonstrate respect for diversity in approaching patients and families.
- Attain the foundation to become a valuable member of the allied health care profession.

The Medical Assistant certificate provides students with a foundation in the skills and knowledge needed to take the certification examinations to become Registered Medical Assistant (AMT).
The Kishwaukee College Medical Assistant Program is an approved program with American Medical Technologists (AMT).

Employment of medical assistants is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations as the health services industry expands due to technological advances in medicine, and a growing and aging population. Increasing utilization of medical assistants in the rapidly growing health care industries will result in fast employment growth for the occupation.

- Students can expect plenty of hands-on experiences in our modern classrooms and labs.
- Clinicals are held at regional healthcare facilities so students can sharpen their skill while working with real patients.
- Kishwaukee College offers a variety of student resources to help with tuition, program supplies, transportation, food, childcare and more.
- The Medical Assistant Certificate provides students with a foundation in the skills and knowledge needed to take the certification examinations to become Registered Medical Assistant (AMT) or a Certified Medical Assistant (AAMA).
- Graduates will be equipped for a variety of opportunities and fulfilling careers in physician’s offices, clinics, and other medical settings.
- Program information sessions will be held in Spring 2026. Check back in late fall 2025 for specific dates and times.
- The Medical Assistant program requires students demonstrate Math and English proficiency and have a 2.5 GPA prior to enrolling in the MA program. Students who do not meet this requirement will be dropped from their MA classes.
- There is not a separate application or process to enroll in the MA program. Students can self-register if they meet the requirements listed above.
- The cohort size is limited (typically to 12 students) due to clinical externship availability.
- Students are strongly encouraged to attend an information session to learn more about the program. Information sessions will be offered on Thursday, March 19, at 1 pm on campus in room C2251, and Wednesday, April 1, at 1 pm in room C2251.
