Kenneth C. Mundy committed a lifetime of service to the city of Sycamore, the surrounding community and his country. For all his efforts, Mundy was posthumously awarded the John C. Roberts Community Service Award at Kishwaukee College’s Spring 2022 Commencement Ceremony on Saturday.
Established in 2009, the John C. Roberts Community Service Award recognizes the importance of community members in the success of Kishwaukee College. Mundy, who passed away in 2019, most recently served as the mayor of Sycamore following a long career in public service.
Mundy enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1966 after graduating from Sycamore High School. He served in combat at the height of the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1970. Following his enlistment, he returned to Sycamore and began his college education. In 1972, Mundy earned an associate degree in business from Kishwaukee College and then transferred to Northern Illinois University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in finance.
Turning his background in finance into a career, Mundy took the role of Treasurer for the Sycamore Public Library in 1972, which was the start of 45 years of service to the City of Sycamore. In 1981, Mundy was elected as Sycamore’s Treasurer — a position he held until he was elected Sycamore’s Mayor in 2005. Mundy served three terms as the city’s mayor and retired from the role in 2017.
Mundy was a member of many service groups and organizations, including the original Kishwaukee College Alumni Association, where he received the Outstanding Service Award. His lifetime of dedication to making improvements for the local community has had a profound impact on Kishwaukee College and the region it serves.
